The ESF RNP EARTHTIME workshop “Absolute Timescales for the Quaternary” will be organized from 7-11 October, 2012, in Santorini, Greece (by invitation only). This Research Network Programme (RNP) EARTHTIME-EU is part of a broader international initiative “EARTHTIME: a community-based scientific effort aimed at sequencing Earth history through an integrated geochronologic and stratigraphic approach”.
Established techniques for dating the Late Quaternary (14C and U-series) have recently been complemented by several exciting developments in new or improved techniques including cosmogenic nuclides, optically-stimulated luminescence and 40Ar/39Ar dating. Concomitantly, age models based on climate records and tephrochronology have also improved. Several initiatives are proposed to inter-calibrate and/or validate these techniques and re-address metrological calibration issues. In the proposed Science Meeting we will bring together specialists to coordinate this research effort at a European level.
We intend to bring together key researchers from the communities involved (14C, U-series, U/Pb, 40Ar/39Ar, OSL, TCN, INTIMATE) to discuss the key issues related to achieving the aims of (1) intercalibration and/or validation of techniques employed in Quaternary timescale calibration, and (2) as a next step application of these techniques to the Quaternary rock record.
European researchers are at the centre of these efforts and it is anticipated that this workshop will increase communication across the community and provide a platform for planning a coordinated approach to issues that will have widespread implications for the Earth and Astronomical Sciences. Validation of different methodologies requires development of new knowledge and training of young researchers, for which funding might be sought from the EU 7th framework.
The workshop will be held from October 7-11, 2012 in the El Greco hotel and conference center in Fira, Santorini, Greece. There is no registration fee. We cover all expenses during the conference, including a 1 day field and a contribution towards travel costs. A limited number of PhD students is welcome to join the meeting, but ESF doesn’t allow funding for them.
